Two days, one car, zero wasted hours: how to spend a first weekend in Boca Raton the way people who live here actually do it.

Friday evening: land soft in Mizner Park

Start where the city is most walkable. Park once in the Mizner Park garage and stay on foot. Have a drink on the Plaza Real sidewalk, walk the free sculpture garden outside the Boca Raton Museum of Art, and check whether the amphitheater has a show — roughly half the weekends of the year, it does, and a good share of those are free.

Dinner is the one thing to book ahead. Trattoria Romana for a loud, warm Roman room; Casa D'Angelo if you want the wine list; Kapow Noodle Bar if you would rather eat late and cheap.

Saturday morning: the reef, then the shade

Be at Red Reef Park before 9am. The man-made reef sits about 20 yards offshore in chest-deep water and is the most reliable beginner snorkeling between Miami and Stuart. Parking fills by 10:30 on a clear Saturday.

Cross A1A to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center afterwards. It is free, it takes 45 minutes, and the observation tower gives you the only elevated view of the barrier island you will get without a boat.

If you want a full beach day instead, go straight to Spanish River Park — 95 acres, deep pine shade, grills, and tunnels under A1A to nearly a mile of quieter sand.

Saturday afternoon: pick a direction

North takes you to Delray Beach in 15 minutes: Atlantic Avenue, Pineapple Grove galleries and the Morikami gardens 20 minutes west. South and west take you to Sugar Sand Park if you have kids. Rain sends you to the Boca Raton Museum of Art or the Norton in West Palm.

Saturday night

Waterfront first: drinks at Boca Landing looking at the inlet bridge, then dinner. If you want an actual night out rather than a nice dinner, drive to Delray and walk Atlantic Avenue east from Swinton — the density of patios and live music there is something Boca proper does not try to match.

Sunday: markets, brunch, water

In season, Sanborn Square Green Market runs Saturday mornings downtown and the Delray GreenMarket is the bigger sibling. For brunch, Rebel House if you can get in, The Seed Kitchen if you want to be at the beach 10 minutes later.

Finish on the water. Deck 84 in Delray, Two Georges in Boynton, or simply the Boca Inlet jetty, which costs nothing and gives you the best yacht-watching in the county.

What to skip

Do not build the weekend around shopping unless that is the point of the trip. Do not plan a beach day for a stiff east wind — check the beach day score on our weather page first. And do not drive I-95 between 4pm and 6:30pm if there is any alternative.
