Boca Raton for First-Time Visitors: What to Know Before You Go

The practical briefing: which airport, whether you need a car, what things cost and when to come.

Getting here

Three airports serve Boca Raton. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is closest at about 30 minutes. Palm Beach International (PBI) is 35 minutes north and usually calmer. Miami (MIA) is an hour south with the widest international choice. Brightline runs high-speed rail with a Boca Raton station downtown, connecting to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Miami without a car.

Getting around

Rent a car unless your entire trip is downtown and the beach. A free city trolley loops downtown, rideshare is plentiful, and Brightline handles the north-south trips. I-95 and Federal Highway both run the length of the county; avoid I-95 from 4pm to 6:30pm.

Where to stay

Downtown and Mizner Park put you within walking distance of dinner and the museum. The beach side of A1A costs more and trades walkability for sand. West Boca is cheaper and requires driving for everything. Delray Beach is the pick if nightlife matters more than quiet.

When to come

Peak season runs January through April: perfect weather, highest prices, busiest restaurants. May and November through December are the sweet spot for value. June to September is hot, humid and stormy in the afternoons, and it is also hurricane season — travel insurance is sensible.

What things cost

Beach parking runs a few dollars an hour with higher non-resident rates. A good dinner for two runs $90 to $160 before drinks. Museum admission is generally under $20. Most of the best nature — the wetlands boardwalks, Gumbo Limbo, the trails — is free.

Local etiquette

Dress is resort casual almost everywhere; jackets are rarely required but shorts at a Mizner Park dinner will mark you as a visitor. Tipping is 18-20%. Sea turtle nesting season runs March to October, which means no white lights on the beach at night and no touching marked nests.
